On Sales and Writing

All humans are involved in sales whether they know it or not. When you’re picking a spot to eat for dinner, you’re pitching ideas to your friends on where to go. The same goes for when you’re looking for a new job or even the one hiring. Everyone has value to offer and needs to be able to effectively display that value.

Saleshumans aren’t always barking on the telephone or giving presentations like many movies depict. There is a huge sub sector of sales that involves months to years of planning, strategy and understanding of a company’s pain points.

This is where it literally pays to hone your writing craft and work on storytelling. When you’re orating, it’s a lot easier to read the room and leverage your tone and gestures to belay a point. On the flip side, when you’re putting pen to paper it’s an entirely different ballgame.

Your crutches are taken away from you and you’re forced to just confront the pitch. You have to rely on captivating your audience with well-timed pauses and a concise message.

The next time you have a big presentation coming up or a pitch to a larger potential client. Try writing your pitch down and reading through it. You may end up finding some holes in your story or piece together a more captivating pitch.
